You shouldn't have to pay for paper copies or postage when information can be easily digitized and sent to you by email. Let's make sure our process is up to date to serve our modern world and works for everyone, not just those who can afford it.
Requiring public notice of all County Commission meetings, ensuring they are video/audio recorded, and that the recordings are provided for public review in a timely manner just makes sense if you want an open and transparent government.
Shedding light on information request denials will help ensure that our public servants give us the information that we have a right to see with consistency and within the timelines required by law. No more sweeping things under the rug or neglecting to respond.
No one should be in fear of retaliation or have available information limited based on who is asking. It's public information that you have a right to see. Complying with anonymous information requests is not only safer, but we believe that requiring identifying information is a violation of your 4th amendment right to be secure in your personal information.
TESSO will turn the public information paradigm on it's head. Instead of answering for who you are and why you're asking, it puts the accountability squarely on public employees to answer for information they decline to provide. If there is sound reasoning and basis for the denial, that's something we can all get behind. But we need to take bold steps to re-empower the people.
Until this issue is discussed, adjusted, and vetted by the citizens, the work isn't complete. We acknowledge that TESSO isn't perfect. But it's a place to start the discussion. A discussion that we hope will result in a Cabell County that is more open to it's citizens than the long-standing status-quo.
